The arms of the Diocese of Amarillo are yellow to reflect that the name of the See City is the Spanish word for yellow.  On the field is placed the symbol of salvations, the cross, on which Our Blessed Lord gave His life so that we might have eternal life.  This cross is red to honor the Spanish explorers who first settled the area that is now the Amarillo Diocese.

The upper left of the diocesan arms is a red gridiron to honor St. Laurence, Patron of the Diocese, who, tradition tells us, was martyred by being roasted on a grill.  Opposite the gridiron, in the lower right of the Diocesan arms, is a tongue of fire to represent the gifts of the Holy Spirit.  This tongue of fire is blue to reflect the fire of the natural gas and oil that are major products of the area.
