Amarillo—Academic competition season is in full swing for Amarillo Catholic Schools, having competed at six events, with several students qualifying for regional and state competition.
Here’s a recap, as provided by school officials:
Holy Cross Catholic Academy participated in the MathCounts event on Feb. 9 at Amarillo College’s West Campus, with the HCCA team placing fourth overall. The team was comprised of eighth grade students Kayla Wilhelm, Michael Christian, Ryan Huseman and Abby Wallace. Seventh grade student Abby Rickwartz finished second overall and qualified for the MathCounts State Meet on Friday, March 22 to Sunday, March 24 in Austin.
Holy Cross also took part in the Middle School Science Bowl Feb. 9 at West Texas A&M University in Canyon. The team placed in the top 12. Thirty-one teams took part in the event. Representing Holy Cross were eighth grade student Gabe Bezner, seventh grade students Patrick Villafuerte and William Peña and sixth grade student Anthony Innocenti.
At the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) 2A District 1 Meet in Sherman Feb. 11, Holy Cross Catholic Academy placed second overall in Academic and Speech and third overall in Art.
Qualifying for the state meet were:
• Senior Nena Fierro, who qualified in three events after finishing first in both Ready Writing and Literary Criticism and second in Original Oratory;
• Senior Jena Rizcallah, who finished second in Prose Interpretation and third in Solo Acting;
• Senior Titus Medley, who finished first in Persuasive Speaking;
• Senior Daniel Huseman, who finished first in Spelling;
• Senior Cecilia Rios, who took second in both Sculpture and Photography;
• Senior Tina Dang, who finished fourth in Mixed Media;
• Junior Lianne Wallace, who claimed second place in three events: Ready Writing, Spelling and Fashion & Jewelry Design;
• Junior Kristin Huseman, who finished second in two events: Literary Criticism and Poetry Interpretation;
• Junior Miranda Crow, who finished first in both Drawing—Black & White and Onsite Drawing;
• Junior Addison Tenorio, who qualified in two events, finishing second in Persuasive Speaking and third in Original Oratory;
• Junior Chris Sinclair, who finished second in Mathematics; and,
• Sophomore Kristin Acker, who finished first in Social Studies.
The State Art Meet is set for Friday, March 22 and Saturday, March 23, while the State Academic and Speech Meet is scheduled Friday, April 5 and Saturday, April 6. Both meets will take place at Concordia University in Austin.
Holy Cross Catholic Academy and St. Mary’s Cathedral School students took part in the annual South Plains Science and Engineering Fair Feb. 15 at Texas Tech University in Lubbock.
Out of 531 entries, six HCCA students made it to the second round of competition. Seventh grade student Anna Phillips finished first in 7th grade Biological.
Freshman Steffen Lindauer finished second in 9th grade Biological and is an alternate to state for the U.S. Army Award.
Qualifying for state was Holy Cross sixth grade student Joey Benitez, who finished first in Physical Science and was a second place trophy winner.
State Competition is scheduled for Monday, March 25 to Friday, March 29 in San Antonio.
Placing for St. Mary’s at the Lubbock meet were:
• Fifth grade students Aaron Vincent and John Reeves, who took top honors in Physical Science. Fifth grade student Christopher Mahoney finished second.
• Fifth grade students took the top two places in Biological Science. Robert Urton finished first, with Maizy Marks claiming second.
• Fourth grade students Andrew Wilhelm and Emily Nguyen took first place in Physical Science, with fellow fourth grade students Aubrey Bellino and Hannah Felker finishing second.
• Fourth grade student Alyssa Romo finished first in Biological Science and also won the Institute of Environmental and Human Health Award for her project “Tadpoles and Their Environment.”
Holy Cross Catholic Academy and St. Joseph’s School hosted the annual Private Schools Interscholastic Association (PSIA) competition Feb. 23.
HCCA placed third in the middle school division, with eight schools taking part in the meet. More than 330 students made up the 575 entries in 63 events during the day-long meet, according to HCCA Representative and PSIA District Director Elizabeth Pace.
Amarillo Catholic School students qualifying for the State Meet Saturday, April 27 at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth include:
• Carson Eyer of St. Mary’s Cathedral School, who finished first in 4th-5th grade Dictionary Skills;
• Grace Lindauer of Holy Cross Catholic Academy, who finished first in 7th grade Science and second in 6th-8th grade Dictionary Skills;
• Michael Christian of Holy Cross Catholic Academy, who took top honors in 7th-8th grade Impromptu Speaking;
• Andrew Jackson of St. Mary’s Cathedral School, who finished second in 4th grade Maps, Graphs and Charts;
• Shane Huseman of Holy Cross Catholic Academy, who finished first in 6th grade Maps, Graphs and Charts;
• Colby Koetting of St. Mary’s Cathedral School, who finished second in 4th grade Number Sense;
• Jenna Olivieri of St. Joseph’s School, who finished second in 4th grade Prose Interpretation;
• Pierce Seidenberger of St. Joseph’s School, who claimed first place in 5th grade Prose Interpretation;
• Jenna Rickwartz of Holy Cross Catholic Academy, who took top honors in 6th grade Ready Writing;
• Cece Rizcallah of Holy Cross Catholic Academy, who finished second in 7th grade Ready Writing;
• Joey Benitez of Holy Cross Catholic Academy, who finished first in 6th grade Science; and,
• Kayla Wilhelm of Holy Cross Catholic Academy, who captured first place in 8th grade Science.
Alternates to the State Meet include:

Competition continues this week for Holy Cross Catholic Academy, with Regional Choir competition in Lubbock on Tuesday, March 5 and Regional Band competition on Thursday, March 7.
