New Deacon Handbook, Guidelines Promulgated

Thirty-nine deacons and eighteen priests were at the Bishop DeFalco Retreat Center March 1 to witness the promulgation of the new Deacon Handbook and Guidelines for the Diocese of Amarillo.

Bishop Patrick J. Zurek led a discussion and overview of the Handbook, assisted by Deacon Blaine Westlake, Director of the Diaconate Program.

“The Handbook basically quantifies what is understood about the diaconal ministry and obligation into a written format,” said Deacon Westlake. “It is intended to be a convenient and helpful source of information addressing various aspects of the Diaconal Ministry.”

The Guidelines are designed to better diaconal relationships with the Bishop, priests, pastors, fellow deacons, religious, laity and diocesan and parish communities, as well as the deacon’s wife and family, according to Deacon Westlake.

“The Handbook will assist deacons enhance their love of the diaconal ministry, as it clarifies their rights, obligations and responsibilities,” he said. “At the same time, the handbook should clarify the diaconal ministry for our priests and pastors who work regularly with deacons.”
