Second Annual Bishop’s Gala - May 3rd

Amarillo—The Catholic Foundation of the Texas Panhandle will host the second annual Bishop’s Gala Friday, May 3, beginning at 6:00pm at the newly remodeled Amarillo Country Club, 4800 Bushland Blvd.

The evening will include a social hour, dinner, speaker, live auction, dance and casino tables. All proceeds are restricted for the Diocesan Pastoral Center and Diocesan Archives and Museum building fund.

The guest speaker will be Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller, M. Sp.S. Archbishop of San Antonio.

Chairing the gala are Dr. Steve and Linda Astuto, parishioners at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Amarillo.

Archbishop Gustavo was named Archbishop of San Antonio by Pope Benedict XVI on Oct. 14, 2010. Installed as Archbishop on Nov. 23, 2010 at St. Mark the Evangelist Church in San Antonio, he succeeded Archbishop Jose H. Gomez as the sixth Archbishop of San Antonio.

He was appointed an auxiliary bishop of the Chicago Archdiocese on Jan. 24, 2003 by Blessed John Paul II, and ordained on March 19, 2003 by Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., Archbishop of Chicago.

Born Dec. 21, 1956 in San Luis Potosi S.L.P, Mexico to Gustavo García Suarez and Maria Cristina Siller de García, Archbishop Gustavo was the eldest of 15 children. He grew up sweeping floors and washing windows among other responsibilities in the family furniture store until he was 16 years old.

In 1975 Archbishop Gustavo professed as a member of the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit. He was sent to the United States by his order in 1980, where he worked closely with the immigrant community. He was ordained a priest on June 22, 1984 in Guadalajara, Mexico. He became a citizen of the United States on Dec. 15, 1998.

This will be Archbishop Gustavo’s second visit to the Diocese of Amarillo. He attended the events leading up to the elevation of St. Mary’s Church, Amarillo, to Cathedral-status on March 24-25, 2011.
