He was appointed an auxiliary bishop of the Chicago Archdiocese on Jan. 24, 2003 by Blessed John Paul II, and ordained on March 19, 2003 by Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., Archbishop of Chicago.
Born Dec. 21, 1956 in San Luis Potosi S.L.P, Mexico to Gustavo García Suarez and Maria Cristina Siller de García, Archbishop Gustavo was the eldest of 15 children. He grew up sweeping floors and washing windows among other responsibilities in the family furniture store until he was 16 years old.
In 1975 Archbishop Gustavo professed as a member of the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit. He was sent to the United States by his order in 1980, where he worked closely with the immigrant community. He was ordained a priest on June 22, 1984 in Guadalajara, Mexico. He became a citizen of the United States on Dec. 15, 1998.
This will be Archbishop Gustavo’s second visit to the Diocese of Amarillo. He attended the events leading up to the elevation of St. Mary’s Church, Amarillo, to Cathedral-status on March 24-25, 2011.
“We invite everyone to join us for a great evening of fellowship, outstanding food and an excellent speaker in Archbishop Gustavo,” said Kim Richard, director of Development and Stewardship for the Diocese of Amarillo. “Proceeds from the evening will assist the Diocesan Pastoral Center and the Diocesan Archives and Museum’s building fund.”
