Spanish Musicians Workshop

The Most Important Songs: The Ordinary Chants of the Mass, is the subject of a Musicians Workshop for Spanish Musicians, set for Saturday, Dec. 6 at 9:00am at St. Mary?s Cathedral, 1200 South Washington.

Bishop Patrick J. Zurek will welcome the participants and preside at the Opening Prayer, according to Father Hector J. Madrigal, pastor at St. Joseph?s Church.

Nationally recognized musician Pedro Rubalcava will lead the workshop. Among the topics to be covered during the workshop include Ordinary Chants and the Dynamic of the Liturgy.

?The most important songs of the Mass are those that the people sing together with the ministers,? he said. ?Among these are the ordinary chants, those to be sung by the priest or the deacon or the lector, with the people responding, or by the priest and people together.

?We will dialogue about the texts which the Roman Missal presents to us, their meaning within the dynamic of the liturgy, effective ways in which to introduce them to the assembly, as well as, sing through a new repertoire for use in our parishes.?

Pedro Rubalcava has been directing liturgical music groups for more than 30 years. For the past 26 years, he has been working in professional pastoral ministries in various areas, including liturgy and music, evangelization, youth and young adult ministry, catechetical ministry and RCIA.

Rubalcava received national recognition in 1990 when Amanecer, his bilingual music collection, was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Mexican/American Performance category. At this time he is the Director of Hispanic Ministries for Oregon Catholic Press (OCP). He also serves on the executive board of the Instituto Nacional Hispano de Liturgica as the Northwest representative.
