Amarillo—A Thrill of Hope is the theme of an Advent Mission Sunday, Dec. 1 and Monday, Dec. 2 at St. Mary’s Cathedral, 1200 South Washington.
The mission will be offered both evenings at 6:00, according to Father Anthony C. Neusch, rector at St. Mary’s Cathedral. The public is invited to attend, but for those who wish to view the presentations at home, the talks will be live streamed on the cathedral’s website, stmarysamarillo.com.
Britt Fisk, who resides on the grasslands of northeastern New Mexico near Clayton, will be the speaker for the opening evening of the mission.
“As the heartaches of this life surround us with crosses that seem to become heavier, it is so easy to lose hope,” she said. “Our world becomes dark—our souls, heavy. Amid the darkness centuries ago, God sent a Light... a thrill of hope. And He sends it still today. As we journey toward Christmas, may we discover reason to rejoice.”
Fisk’s story of surrender and hope was shared in a keynote address at the 2022 Good News Conference. Her story was recounted in a homily by Father Mike Schmitz, entitled Finding Beauty in Suffering.
“I love the Surrender prayer so much!” said Fisk. “It’s my constant and one I always must repeat again and again. “O Jesus, I surrender myself to You. Take care of everything!”
Fisk describes her family as “fun-loving, simple-living, God-fearing family” raising cattle on the grasslands of New Mexico.
“As a family we have served our country for eight years, worked for the President of the United States, completed a tour in Iraq, earned two master's degrees, become Catholic and entered the journey of life called parenthood,” she added.
The following evening, the mission continues with the focus on Fisk’s message, and will include Carols of Advent, led by St. Mary’s music and liturgy director Dr. Greg Onofrio. There will be refreshments at the conclusion of the mission each evening.
Father Neusch added that during private prayer time each evening of the mission, Stephen Ministers and deacons will be available for those who wish or need to pray with someone.
