La Crosse, Wisc.—Monsignor Matthew G. Malnar will celebrate the 50
th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood on Sunday, July 10 with a 3:00pm Mass in Christ the King Chapel at the Holy Cross Diocesan Center in La Crosse.
Monsignor Malnar, 81, is a native of Chicago, the son of Matt and Mary Briski Malnar. He was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Amarillo on May 28, 1966 in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Milwaukee by then-Archbishop William E. Cousins. His assignments in Texas included parochial vicar at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Amarillo; chaplain of the Newman Club at Amarillo College; parochial vicar and instructor at Christ the King Church and School in Lubbock; and, hospital chaplain at Mercy Hospital in Slaton.
On June 22, 1972, Father Malnar entered the United States Air Force, where he served as a chaplain for 20 years. On Sept. 24, 1992, he was named a Prelate of Honor by Pope (now St.) John Paul II.
Monsignor Malnar now lives in retirement at Holy Cross Diocesan Center and remains active in giving talks on a variety of theological and spiritual subjects.
